Remember to check the ReadMe.txt file that came
with your copy of enotate. It will contain the most
up-to-date information about your version of the software.
Please e-mail any problems you encounter to: problems@informal.com
A. Connection Issues (skip
to next section)
A.1 The Drawing Area does not appear
or disappears
- Your handheld device may have gone to sleep.
Check to see that it is turned on. Ensure you have a long
enough auto off time set in your device preferences.
- Make sure the cable is connected properly
to your PC and that your handheld device is firmly connected
to the HotSync cradle (or the HotSync cable).
- Try switching to another application, such
as the Date Book, on your handheld device using the handheld's
application icon and then switching back to enotate.
- From the PC application (e.g. Word
or PowerPoint) menu bar, select the enotate menu,
then Stop enotate and then select Start enotate
again
- From your handheld device, try zooming in/out
to cause a refresh. Removing your handheld device from the
cradle does NOT cause the drawing area to disappear.
A.2 Your handheld device seems to be
ignoring input
- enotate may be in the process of refreshing
your handheld's screen (you'll see downloading in the upper
right side of your handheld's display.) If so, just wait
a moment and it will be ready to accept input again.
- Try the same steps as in section A.1 "The
Drawing Area does not appear or disappears" above.
A.3 HotSync Manager will no longer synchronise
- Click on the HotSync icon on the System
Tray and ensure that Local (or Modem or Network) has a check
next to it.
- HotSync should not be running if enotate
is running. Switch to another Palm® application, such
as Date Book, before running HotSync. Ensure that enotate
was not the last selected application, even if you have
exited the PC application and turned off your handheld.
- Note that you must have the Palm® Desktop
software installed before you can install enotate.
B. Display Issues
(skip
to next section)
B.1 Your handheld device's display does
not match the drawing area
- Reposition the drawing area slightly to
refresh your handheld's display.
- Try the same steps as section A.1 "The Drawing
Area does not appear or disappears"
above.
B.2 Your handheld device's display appears
all black
- The drawing area may be over an area of
high contrasts (e.g. black text on a grey background with
adjacent white space.) Move the drawing area to reduce the
amount of white area. You may have to experiment to get
the optimal display.
- Try adjusting the PDA Contrast from the enotate
menu on your PC.
B.3 The text on your handheld device's
display is hard to read
- Resize the drawing area - zoom in to make
the text larger. Some fonts can be easier to read on your
handheld device screen than others so you may have to play
with the best sizing for your particular document.
- Turn off the formatting marks in your application
(e.g. from the Word menu, Tools <Options), as this will
tend to make your handheld's display easier to see.
- Try adjusting the PDA Contrast from the enotate
menu on your PC.
B.4 Some pen colors do not display on
your handheld device
- Due to the grey scale conversions, certain
pen colors do not show up on certain backgrounds on your
handheld but do show up on your PC. If this happens, select
a different pen color.
B.5 Multiple or broken images on your
handheld device's display
- If you have used max/min zoom too quickly,
the images may become broken. If you wait for your handheld's
"downloading" message to disappear or for the
"hourglass" cursor to disappear on your PC, then
reposition the drawing area slightly to cause a refresh
of your handheld's display.
B.6 Edits "jump" to another
part of the display
- If the drawing area is moved or zoomed so
that part of it is off the document image or slide, and
edits are made in these margins, the image may jump back
into the document/slide space. If this happens, move off
the page and back to cause a refresh. To avoid this problem,
do not edit off the document image.
B.7 The drawing area sometimes jumps
to another part of the document
- You may have started to edit over an imbedded
hyperlink or a button on a floating toolbox. The enotate
'pen down' looks like a mouse click to your PC and may cause
the application to change display. This is rare but if it
happens, undo the last edit and reposition the drawing area
back in the original area, but avoid starting the edit on
the area directly over the link/toolbox.
B.8 Your handheld device's screen clears
but not your PC display
- Due to the way the Palm® OS operates,
it may be necessary to reposition the drawing area to cause
a handheld screen refresh, which will return it to the correct
display.
B.9 Excel grid lines do not appear
properly on your handheld
- This is likely an issue with the resolution
of the display on your handheld. You should try the suggestions
in section B."Display Issues" above.
C. PC Application Issues (skip
to next section)
C.1 Undo does not seem to work
- In Word, enotate edits are graphic
elements. It may take several Undo commands (Ctrl-Z from
your PC) to remove an edit. To clear all enotate
edits, from the menu bar select enotate <Clear
annotations to remove them all, and Undo from the menu bar
to restore them.
- In PowerPoint, Undo might undo more than
just the last edit. In some cases, all of the edits on the
slide are removed, and sometimes edits on some or all of
the other slides are also removed. This is related to the
type of input. If you have made text changes to your PowerPoint
document, then only those enotate edits made after
the text changes are removed on an Undo. A Redo will restore
all of the removed edits.
- In PowerPoint, Clear Annotations and Clear
Screen both work on a per-slide basis. Undo will restore
the cleared slide.
C.2 Repagination error message
- If a Word document is zoomed to greater than
100% you may get an error message that repagination must
complete. Change the zoom to 100% or less.
C.3 Eudora fails to respond
- If enotate is running on your handheld
device (i.e. the drawing area is visible), Eudora Pro may
fail to start. If this occurs, exit enotate on your
handheld device to allow Eudora to load. Once Eudora is
loaded, enotate can be used normally.
C.4 enotate fails to remove itself
from the task bar
- If Word, Excel, or PowerPoint crashes, enotate
may not be given the chance to close properly, which leaves
enotate in the task bar. If this happens, you must
close enotate manually (right-click enotate's
task bar icon and select Close.)
C.5 In Excel, annotations appear under
the chart
- To annotate a chart in Excel, the chart must
be not be selected for the annotation to show on top of
the chart.
C.6 Cannot start enotate
- If, after you have you have opened and closed
Excel, you cannot use enotate upon opening Excel
again, you may have to manually close enotate. To
do this, from the Close Program Task Manager, close any
of the following programs: Excel, Launcher, enotate,
MDM.
C.7 PowerPoint is running extremely slow
- Check the battery level on your handheld.
Performance degradation can occur in any of the Office applications
when your handheld device is low on batteries.
C.8 Web View mode does not work in Office
applications
- enotate supports only the Print Layout
view mode in Word - it does not support the other modes.
Use Print Layout when using enotate.
D. Print Issues
D.1 Your PC display is not redrawn properly
after printing
- In the enotate PC application, if
after choosing File/Print, you look at Printer Properties,
then print, the area under the Properties dialog box may
be redrawn incorrectly. You can zoom in/out or choose Clear
Screen, then Undo to refresh the area correctly.
D.2 The drawing area disappears on Print
Preview
- Selecting Print Preview for an image when
no default printer has been selected may cause both the
drawing area and the image to vanish. Ensure that you have
a default printer selected before you use enotate.
E. Miscellaneous Issues
E.1 Your handheld device does not suspend
- This is not enotate-specific. On some
versions of the Palm® OS, the device does not automatically
power down if still connected to the cradle. If you see
this, ensure you have removed your handheld device from
the cradle or turned it off when you are done.
