ENOTATE™ SOFTWARE TRANSFORMS THE HANDHELD DEVICE INTO ELECTRONIC
PEN AND PAPER
Informal Software, Inc.™ Announces Product That Will Turn
Stylus-Based Devices Like the PalmPilot Into the Ideal "4th
Peripheral"
SANTA
CLARA, Calif. (11/8/99) — A new start-up, Informal
Software, Inc., announced a revolutionary software product today
that will fundamentally change the way people communicate and share
ideas electronically by enabling handheld devices like 3Com’s
PalmPilot to become the electronic equivalent of pen and paper.
Informal’s enotate software allows a stylus-based device such
as 3Com’s PalmPilot to become a real-time, direct extension
of the PC, giving users, for the first time, the ability to annotate
text, sketch ideas and draw directly onto their PC applications
via their handheld devices using natural handwriting. This ground-breaking
software will enable the PalmPilot to become the ideal 4th peripheral
for the PC, working alongside the traditional keyboard, mouse and
monitor by allowing tasks normally done with pen and paper to be
performed digitally.enotate software will be available at the end
of 1999 from Informal Software’s website for a market price
of $49.99.

Software: The 4TH Peripheral for PC's
"The worldwide handheld companion industry is expected to grow
40% next year," said Diana Hwang, program manager, mobile research
for International Data Corp. "IDC believes that as mobile business
professionals and individual users deploy handhelds in their environment,
they will want to communicate information in a more robust manner."
enotate software enables stylus-based devices such as the PalmPilot
to be used as a direct PC input/output device alongside the traditional
keyboard, mouse and monitor. Unlike pen tablets, drawing/sketching
software packages or other pen-based computing solutions, Informal
Software’s enotate allows stylus-based devices to interact
naturally with a personal computer in a manner analogous to the
comfortable "pen and paper" model. enotate software currently
supports use with 3Com’s PalmPilot, with support for other
handheld platforms, including Windows CE devices and next generation
smart phones, to follow.By turning the handheld device into the
electronic analog of pen and paper, Informal Software’s enotate
software will allow PC users to communicate like never before in
the most natural and informal manner possible. For the first time,
users will be able to sketch ideas, create handwritten notes and
annotate documents digitally using their handheld devices as the
ideal 4th peripheral. enotate software has redefined the use of
the stylus-based device by taking it to another level, adding new
value to a tool consumers already use on a daily basis.
"We
see this product as marking the beginning of an era in which PC
computing will be fundamentally changed to become a more informal
and personal process," said Ian Cullimore, president and CEO
of Informal Software. "In the early days of the mouse, consumers
weren’t aware of the dramatic impact it would have on everyday
computer use. Now, no one can imagine PC computing without one.
With the introduction of enotate, the basic computing model will
again be redefined to include the stylus-based device as an indispensable
computing tool."enotate Software: An Optimal Tool for Everyday
Computing
enotate software supports two primary functions that make it the
ideal software product for handheld device users. First, its unique
design enables the initial creation of such original items as drawings,
maps, layouts, floor plans, diagrams and even doodles. Second, enotate
software allows users to mark up, or annotate, previously-produced
information such as Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, digital
photographs and more. The notes, suggestions and corrections can
be written directly on top of these documents and erased without
alteration of the original document.
Sketches
and mark-ups created via the stylus-based device are seen on the
PC monitor in real-time as they are produced on the device. This
permits users to follow the natural flow of writing by avoiding
the challenging task of looking at the PC screen while writing on
the stylus-based device. Sketches can also be created and saved
within the stylus-based device to be later transferred to the PC.
About
Informal Software
Informal Software, Inc., founded in 1998, provides innovative software
solutions that enable a stylus-based device, such as 3Com’s
PalmPilot, to be used as a direct PC input/output device alongside
the traditional keyboard, mouse, and display. Unlike pen tablets,
drawing/sketching software packages or other pen-based computing
solutions, Informal Software’s unique "Informal Interface"
allows these stylus-based devices to interact naturally with a personal
computer in a manner analogous to the comfortable "pen and
paper" model. Informal Software’s enotate allows PC-based
electronic documents, sketches, and/or digital photos/drawings to
be "marked up" and/or annotated in real-time, directly
from a stylus-based device. In addition, enotate allows initial
concepts such as informal sketches, layouts, drawings, maps, etc.
to be expressed in a natural fashion on an electronic medium. With
enotate, users will for the first time, be able to naturally and
intuitively represent and communicate electronically the true "gist"
of information, messages, thoughts and statements using a digital
document or image.
