Background
Informal
Software was founded by Dr Ian Cullimore in 1996 to address the
limitations of the traditional tools of keyboard and mouse. While
these devices are well suited for "formal" data entry,
such as typing a document, the ability to capture "informal"
input – a sketch, a circled word, or other freehand annotation
– has been noticeably absent. With Informal Software, this
void is being filled.
Our
first commercial product, enotate® Classic, shipped in 2000.
It provides a user the ability to mark up an electronic document
or image on their handheld device - using the stylus to do "freehand"
non-textual annotations (such as circling a word or sketching a
quick drawing) much as they would mark up a printout with a big
red pen (click here to see the enotate demo). Unlike a graffiti
package, the annotations are synched to the PC as they write (rather
than as a separate, distinct action) and can be directly integrated
into common applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint
to be saved and emailed to others.
We
essentially serve two sets of customers. We partner with software
and hardware vendors, deploying our technology with theirs to add
value to their product offerings. At the same time, commercial consumers
are served with end-user products such as enotate. Informal Software
is privately held, with offices in Silicon Valley, CA and the UK.
Initial investors include Hanson Capital of London and private parties.
